Urban Analytics
This course is an introduction to urban analytics and spatial data science.
Urban analytics uses data to create figurative slices through cities. Think of it like drawing a section through a building: you cut in one direction to analyse volumes, heights, and relationships between parts. That slice is detailed but limited. So you draw more, in other locations, and through this process you refine your understanding of the whole. The detailed view and the big picture reinforce each other.
Done well, it becomes a dialogue with the city, which calls for a reflexive mindset: learning from what the data reveals, understanding where it falls short, and balancing analysis with what you already know. Madrid is our case study throughout.
Mastery
These are practical courses best approached with a hands-on and exploratory mindset. Mastering these techniques takes practice combined with personal initiative for developing your skills over time.
Using AI
We encourage the use of AI, but in a constructive and active way. It is excellent at explaining concepts, helping to debug code, and as a collaborative sidekick for working through problems or brainstorming solutions. But if you use it passively you’re more likely to stagnate, and you will miss the opportunity to learn through the process.
